Panoramica

Void is an open-source AI-powered code editor designed for developers who want intelligent coding assistance without giving up control or privacy. It combines familiar editor functionality with AI features like code generation, refactoring, and contextual suggestions. Because it is open source, Void allows users to inspect the code, self-host, and connect their own AI models or API keys. This makes it a flexible alternative to closed AI editors for teams and individuals who prioritize transparency and customization. Void targets developers who want the productivity of modern AI tooling while keeping ownership of their data, model choices, and editor environment.

Skeptical, then convinced

I went in skeptical — most tools in this space overpromise. It actually delivers on support for multiple LLM providers, and strong privacy and self-hosting options caught me off guard. Smaller ecosystem than established editors is why this isn't a perfect score, still, I'd recommend giving it a real trial.

Does the job

Pretty happy overall. AI-assisted code writing and editing just works and bring-your-own model and API keys. but no dealbreakers — I'd recommend it to a friend without hesitating.

Solid for our team

We rolled this out across the team last quarter and strong privacy and self-hosting options. Support for multiple LLM providers fits neatly into how we already work, and aI-assisted code writing and editing removed a step we used to do by hand. but it has held up under daily use.

Years in this space

I've evaluated a lot of these over the years. What stands out here is contextual code suggestions — handled better than most — and fully open source and transparent. Worth the time if this is your use case.
