Yleiskatsaus

Lume is a command-line tool designed to simplify creating and managing virtual machines on Apple Silicon Macs. It provides a minimal, scriptable interface for spinning up macOS and Linux guests without the overhead of a full GUI virtualization app. Built with Apple's Virtualization framework in mind, Lume targets developers who need reproducible, disposable environments for testing, CI workflows, or isolated development. Commands cover the full VM lifecycle, from image pulls to start, stop, and configuration changes. Its focus on being lightweight makes it a practical choice for engineers who prefer working in the terminal and want predictable, automatable VM tooling on M-series hardware.

Years in this space

I've evaluated a lot of these over the years. What stands out here is image pulling and management — handled better than most — and scriptable for automation and CI. Worth the time if this is your use case.

Compared a few options

Evaluated this against two competitors. Where it wins: configurable CPU, memory, and disk and native support for Apple Silicon. On balance the feature set — especially apple Silicon optimized virtualization — justifies the 5 stars for our use case.

Skeptical, then convinced

I went in skeptical — most tools in this space overpromise. It actually delivers on macOS and Linux guest support, and lightweight with minimal overhead caught me off guard. still, I'd recommend giving it a real trial.
