Amazon Q Developer is a generative AI assistant from AWS designed to support developers across the entire software lifecycle. It can generate code, explain unfamiliar codebases, suggest fixes, write tests, and help migrate or modernize legacy applications, with deep awareness of AWS services and best practices. It integrates with popular IDEs such as Visual Studio Code, JetBrains, and Visual Studio, as well as the AWS Console, CLI, and chat interfaces. Teams can use it for tasks ranging from autocomplete-style suggestions to agentic workflows that plan and execute multi-step changes across a repository. Geared toward professional and enterprise development, Amazon Q Developer emphasizes security scanning, reference tracking for suggested code, and customization on private codebases so recommendations align with internal standards.

Use it every day

Honestly didn't expect to like it this much. Java and .NET application upgrade assistance is exactly what I needed, and works inside major IDEs and the AWS Console. I do wish quality varies outside AWS-centric workflows, but I reach for it almost every day now and it just clicks.

Does the job

Pretty happy overall. Codebase customization for internal libraries just works and built-in security scanning and code references. Customization setup can be complex can be annoying, but no dealbreakers — I'd recommend it to a friend without hesitating.

Solid for our team

We rolled this out across the team last quarter and agentic features for multi-step tasks like upgrades. Codebase customization for internal libraries fits neatly into how we already work, and inline code generation and chat in IDEs removed a step we used to do by hand. Quality varies outside AWS-centric workflows, which is the main caveat, but it has held up under daily use.
