Přehled

Bob is an AI agent designed to act as both a builder and a programmer, powered by the gptme framework. It can write code, execute commands, manipulate files, and chain together multi-step tasks, giving developers a flexible assistant that works alongside their existing tools and workflows. Because it's built on gptme, Bob inherits a transparent, scriptable foundation that runs locally or in your own environment. This makes it suitable for developers who want more control over how their AI agent behaves, what models it uses, and how it integrates into their stack. Whether you're prototyping a new app, automating repetitive engineering tasks, or experimenting with agent workflows, Bob aims to provide a practical, hackable starting point for AI-driven development.

Automate Repetitive Engineering Tasks

Use Bob to chain shell commands, edit files, and execute multi-step workflows, freeing developers from repetitive coding and maintenance chores.

Prototype Applications Quickly

Leverage Bob's code generation and editing abilities to scaffold and iterate on new app prototypes directly from your terminal.

Run a Self-Hosted Coding Assistant

Deploy Bob locally or in your own environment via gptme, choosing your preferred LLM backend for full control over models and data.

Experiment with Agent Workflows

Build and test custom multi-step agent behaviors on a transparent, scriptable foundation suited for developers exploring agentic patterns.

Compared a few options

Evaluated this against two competitors. Where it wins: code generation and editing and handles coding and shell tasks. On balance the feature set — especially code generation and editing — justifies the 5 stars for our use case.

Years in this space

I've evaluated a lot of these over the years. What stands out here is customizable model backend — handled better than most — and good for automation and prototyping. Worth the time if this is your use case.

Solid for our team

We rolled this out across the team last quarter and open and built on gptme. Multi-step task execution fits neatly into how we already work, and multi-step task execution removed a step we used to do by hand. Less polished than commercial agents, which is the main caveat, but it has held up under daily use.

Does the job

Pretty happy overall. Code generation and editing just works and open and built on gptme. Capabilities depend on chosen LLM can be annoying, but no dealbreakers — I'd recommend it to a friend without hesitating.

Skeptical, then convinced

I went in skeptical — most tools in this space overpromise. It actually delivers on developer-focused workflows, and good for automation and prototyping caught me off guard. still, I'd recommend giving it a real trial.
