Übersicht

AI EdWiBo is an automated writing assessment tool designed for learners and teachers preparing for Cambridge English exams such as FCE, CAE, and CPE. It evaluates written responses against CEFR criteria and returns a band-level score along with reasoning for each judgment. The tool focuses on the specific demands of Cambridge writing tasks, including essays, reports, reviews, and proposals. Beyond a numeric grade, it explains why a piece performs at a given level, highlighting issues with content, communicative achievement, organisation, and language use. Teachers can use AI EdWiBo to speed up marking and provide consistent feedback across classes, while students can self-check drafts before submission and iterate on weak areas.

Compared a few options

Evaluated this against two competitors. Where it wins: cEFR level assessment and explains reasoning behind each grade. Where it lags: limited to Cambridge-style writing tasks. On balance the feature set — especially support for FCE, CAE, CPE formats — justifies the 4 stars for our use case.

Does the job

Pretty happy overall. CEFR level assessment just works and saves teachers time on marking. Limited to Cambridge-style writing tasks can be annoying, but no dealbreakers — I'd recommend it to a friend without hesitating.

Skeptical, then convinced

I went in skeptical — most tools in this space overpromise. It actually delivers on reasoned feedback per criterion, and explains reasoning behind each grade caught me off guard. Less useful outside English exam prep is why this isn't a perfect score, still, I'd recommend giving it a real trial.

Solid for our team

We rolled this out across the team last quarter and cEFR-aligned scoring for Cambridge exams. Coverage of multiple writing genres fits neatly into how we already work, and cEFR level assessment removed a step we used to do by hand. Limited to Cambridge-style writing tasks, which is the main caveat, but it has held up under daily use.

Years in this space

I've evaluated a lot of these over the years. What stands out here is reasoned feedback per criterion — handled better than most — and explains reasoning behind each grade. AI judgment may differ from human examiners is my one real gripe. Worth the time if this is your use case.
